The McNab Shepherd Registry in essence exists today because of a partnership between Mars Veterinary Wisdom Panel and the passion of Sandi Hall. Sandi and Kevin Hall were blessed with quite an extraordinary working dog, Cap. Kevin needed a good working dog with his job working with Boyd and Floyd Bucking Bulls. Sandi became fascinated with the breed the strong work ethic of the dogs, the intelligence and the hardiness that was displayed by their McNab Cap. In trying to track down another McNab Sandi realized that there were frequently only word of mouth accountings for lineage although there were some breeders who did keep written records and a few who subscribed to the National Stock Dog Registry.
Pubic knowledge of Canine DNA testing was just beginning to emerge with Mars Veterinary Health having Wisdom Panel developed. Sandi sought help from Wisdom Panel to see if there was a way to define genetically “what constitutes a McNab”. Sandi searched out, many lines of McNabs and asked, even pleaded with owners to submit DNA samples of their lines of dogs that had the McNab breed characteristics. The DNA samples were compiled from McNabs across the US and slowly a traceable profile began to emerge. Over several years the DNA data continued to be collected, and Mars Veterinary Wisdom Panel Labs continued to work to refine the tests and help to identify the DNA signature unique to this special breed.
Through this process, Mars Veterinary Wisdom panel continued to support the efforts of what would become the McNab Shepherd Registry. Wisdom Panel continued to add more research based testing and more refinement to their testing process helping the results become even more clear to see.
Mars Veterinary Wisdom Panel supported the identification of this amazing breed. They saw the value and reasons why this specific dog breed deserved an opportunity to be easily identified to be able to preserve for future generations, this unique breed so many of us love. Without the efforts of Sandi and Mars Veterinary Wisdom panel the McNab Shepherd Registry simply would not be able to provide factual verification that the dogs registered here were truly McNabs. McNabs with high degrees of genetic signature commonalities.
