Over the past few decades, the McNab Shepherd has sharply increased in numbers and popularity. This presented a unique opportunity to examine the breed more closely.
In 2014, Wisdom Health (formally MARS Veterinary) worked with a group of McNab enthusiasts and breeders to collect samples from McNabs across the United States. These samples were evaluated for their genetic signature and found to support the creation of a breed signature for the McNab Shepherd.
Additionally, the tested dogs were also evaluated for certain physical traits and over 100 disease-causing mutations to help establish a baseline for these in the McNab population.
The Genetic Signature of the McNab Shepherd
Wisdom Health used a proprietary marker panel to establish each dog’s unique genetic signature. By examining submitted samples from the group of McNabs, Wisdom Health determined breed ancestry results from the data generated. This enabled them to create a unique genetic signature for the McNab Shepherd.
Substantial efforts were made to ensure that the database fully encompassed the various family lines and the branches of the breed. This helped strengthen of the DNA signature and its ability to identify the extensive variation of McNabs.
